Summer learning journey week 2 day 5 activity 1.

DAY 5: Wasting Away

Activity 1: Off the Menu [4 points]
Fishing is a really common activity in New Zealand. In fact, people have fished in New Zealand for centuries. Unfortunately, over the past few decades, some people have caught too many fish in one area and left the region without enough fish to refill (replenish) the stocks. When this happens we call the area ‘overfished’ and it is closed to all private and commercial fishing. If people are caught fishing in these areas, they are required to pay a fine (money). The maximum fine for fishing in a restricted area is $100 000.
What do you think about this rule? Is it fair that people are charged up to $100 000 for overfishing?

On your blog, tell us what you think about this rule and why you think it!.

I think this rule is fair because they really know they a not allow to fish at that area so they shouldn't. If they did not listen to the rule and they should pay the $ 100 000

  1. Hey Michael, it's Billy here again from the Summer Learning Journey programme. It's fantastic to see that you're continuing to work hard and complete activities. You're going to be more than ready for your next year at school come February.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on whether or not you think it's fair that people can be fined up to $100,000 if they're caught overfishing. I agree with you, rules are rules. It's put in place for good reason. If people overfish in an area then the sea life is going to deplete and eventually there will be no fish at all for people. We need to be responsible and think about our future.

Have you ever been fishing Michael?

    Thanks, Billy.
